Past News and Events
M&D’s Hijack weekend took place over the 17th & 18th
May. It was organised by Young Scot as a pilot event, where a number of
organisations were invited along to promote their organisation by
having an information stall. We took part in both days with volunteers
coming along to provide information on drugs and alcohol to the general
public. A wide range of age groups attended the event with
entertainment from Clyde 1 and we even got to meet John Loughton from
Big Brother Hijack!
Choices for Life took place on the 8th June. We were invited
along to host an information stall on drugs and alcohol which the
volunteers were involved in. The event was advertised as a family day
surrounding health awareness. A number of organizations were involved
including the Police, Liber8, Regenfx:Youth Trust, Healthy Eating
Initiatives and much more. The role of the LANDED volunteers was to
speak to people about the work they do with LANDED as well as to
provide information on drugs and alcohol and to answer any questions.
Crucial Crew 08
Crucial Crew is a five week safety awareness programme attended by all
P7 children across South Lanarkshire. It encourages experiential
learning - children learn more by taking part in activities rather than
being talked to. LANDED’s involvement is to deliver nicotine and
alcohol awareness workshops which are delivered by our volunteers.
The workshops last for 8 minutes, after which the children they move
onto the next workshop which provides useful information on keeping
themselves safe.. Other organizations that are involved include: Fire
Safety, the Police (witnessing and reporting a crime), Internet Safety,
Water Safety, British Transport Police, Drugs Awareness, Road Safety,
Consumer Protection, Bullying and Railway Safety.
NHS 60th Anniversary event 08
LANDED was asked to host a drugs and alcohol awareness raising stall at
the recent event held on 22nd June at Strathclyde Park. The event was
organised by the NHS Lanarkshire, as one of a range of events being
held to help celebrate its 60th anniversary. The day was attended by
all age groups and families with many different health promoting
activities for people to get involved in. The stall was staffed by
volunteers and two staff members. During the event they played alcohol
and drug games with people eager to learn facts about both, they handed
out various leaflets and also used our ‘drug box’ to show what certain
drugs look like and answered any questions from the public.
Democracy Project
Last year in 2007 LANDED decided to try something a bit different… and
the Democracy Project was born. At LANDED the volunteers try to
encourage young people to make positive decisions about their lives by
providing awareness raising sessions on alcohol, drugs and sexual
health, but what about being active citizens and having a voice? We
decided that as there was a General Election on the way, it would be a
good time to encourage young people to register to vote and use their
vote (if old enough) at their local elections.
A lot of young people have no interest in politics as they don’t
think it affects them but they’re wrong. Politics affects all of us
every day… in the food that we eat, when we take a shower, in the
clothes that we buy, when we watch TV or listen to the radio etc. The
list goes on and on.
LANDED received funding from the Electoral Commission to develop a
project designed to encourage young people to register to vote and the
volunteers got creative.
They designed a series of workshops to be delivered to S5 and S6
pupils in schools throughout Lanarkshire. The workshops were fun and
interactive and really got people thinking. Then the volunteers took
to the streets and hosted a series of road- shows in shopping malls and
colleges in an attempt to get as many young people as possible
registering to vote.
The volunteers wanted to do something a bit different and give
young people living in Lanarkshire an opportunity to meet some of the
people who represent us in the Scottish Parliament. We thought it
would be a good idea if young people could ask questions of these
people and get some answers. We also thought it would be good if
political representatives had an opportunity to find out what young
people are really interested in and what issues affect them, so we
decided to host an event that would do exactly that.
An Audience With… was a one off event held in Hamilton with over
100 young people from 12 schools from across Lanarkshire grilling
political reps from 7 parties. Pupils had a chance to ask youth
related questions to the representatives and receive an answer in line
with their party’s policies. The event was a huge success with
everyone having a really good time. The political reps also said they
valued the experience and would take on board the issues that the young
people had raised.
In recognition of all their hard work, LANDED volunteers were asked to take part in the Third Session of the Opening of Parliament
in Edinburgh in front of HM The Queen and First Minister Alex Salmond.
The volunteers had a great day, and even got a wave from 007 himself,
Sir Sean Connery.
