Getting yourself checked out - Young Peoples Clinics

If you think you might have an STI or have had unprotected sex and want to get yourself checked out, there are a few places you can go to. If you’ve never been to a place like this before you might be nervous or worried but you shouldn’t be – these places are there to help you. Here’s some useful info to put your mind at rest.

  • If you go to your family doctor they can’t tell your parents why you’re there even if you are under 16 (unless they think you might be at risk of harm), although if you can talk to a parent then you should as it would be good to get their support. Everything is confidential - although a note of your visit will be kept in your file and if anyone has access to your medical records they will be able to see your info

  • You can go to a sexual health clinic for treatment and advice even if you’re under 16. You don’t have to give your real name, but if you are getting tests done you have to give a contact number so they can let you know the results of your tests. If you go to a GUM clinic, you can get tested for STI’s and HIV and you usually have to give 2 contact numbers so they can get in touch with you if they need to.

  • Family planning clinics can give you advice on sexual health and contraception. Again you don’t have to give your name and you don’t have to give contact details unless you’re getting tests done

There are certain clinics that are there just for young people. The staff there will treat you with respect and won’t give you a hard time. They’ll just be glad that you’re being responsible and looking after your sexual health. There are lots of young peoples sexual health clinics around, and if you don’t want to go to one that’s near you (in case you bump into someone) then jump on the bus to the next town, you don’t have to live in a certain area to be treated.
