What is Lean?

Updated: Jan 13

Lean or Purple Lean is made by combining cough syrups that contain Codeine with soft drinks/energy drinks and sometimes even fruity sweeties. The worry is, Lean may be easy to make but dangerous to drink. In some cases, it can even be deadly.

Lean has become quite popular amongst the hip-hop community. We see celebrities like Lil Wayne (who has a history of illness related to Lean consumption) and Soulja Boy posting pictures of Lean on Social Media which is so dangerous as it can influence so many fans.

The Risks of misusing Lean

Codeine, one of the main ingredients in Lean is an opiate drug (this means lean is placed in the same category as morphine and heroin). Codeine can produce feelings of euphoria however it can also be highly addictive and hard to withdrawal from. Another active drug that can be found within Lean is Promethazine (an antihistamine) which can potentially cause sedating and drowsy effects. This can often cause the user to lean over – hence the reason for the drinks name.
